  • CHAPTER NEWS & EVENTS
Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Chapter Deepen Areas of Cooperation
On June 21 the Chapter’s executive committee met with TAT Governor Suraphon Svetasreni and senior TAT executives. The Chapter thanked the Governor for support and for helping the Chapter conduct activities that led to it winning the Spirit of PATA Award in 2011. The Governor said that the TAT would support the Chapter's 40th anniversary activities and that the TAT would work with PATA on advocacy issues and on Asean economic community integration challenges ahead of 2015. The TAT will also work with PATA and the Tourism Council of Thailand on crisis communication enhancements. On other matters, the Governor told the Chapter that roundtable meetings on sustainability and IT development should be prioritised. The first such meeting is likely to be a joint one-day forum with Earth Check on August 29.
Chapter and Skal Unite with BBC World for Travel Event
The PATA Thailand Chapter, with support from Skal Thailand, is organizing a lunch and discussion with BBC World’s popular travel consumer TV show Fast:Track. The program’s main presenter, Rajan Datar will speak at the event which will (provisionally) be held on Tuesday August 7 at the Scarlett Wine Bar & Restaurant at the Pullman Bangkok Hotel G. The Chapter will officially update members shortly.
Does Bangkok Need More Attractions to Stay Competitive?
The PATA Thailand Chapter held a presentation and discussion, “No Attractions, No Tourists!” June 27 at the new Asiatique Riverfront complex in Bangkok. The attendees heard about plans for Asiatique’s expansion as Bangkok’s newest attraction which is already popular with over 40,000 visitors a day at the weekends. The former East Asiatic Port founded by Danish traders in 1884 now has 40 bars and restaurants, 1,500 shops and a 12,000 sqm event plaza. The Chapter debate, however, was on the extent to which Thailand needs mega attractions, the way neighbouring countries have developed Disneyland, Legoland, Ngong Ping 360 and other mass tourism icons. Cultural tourism journalist Luc Citrinot spoke at the event. He told the audience that Thailand’s museums were too old fashioned and not creative and interactive enough. One debate was if the Grand Palace, Bangkok’s leading attraction, should be open at night and offer a light and sound show. See HotelCircleAsia’s report on “No Attractions, No Tourists!” here.
